Jim and Helen Carreker, owners since January 2005, have spent more than ten years researching and ultimately selecting the Barossa Valley and the stunningly beautiful Marananga hilltop site for their Australian food and wine venture. Their belief that luxurious accommodation complements a truly memorable food and wine experience is based on numerous personal trips in the 1980's and 1990's to France, Spain, Portugal and to their then local Napa and Sonoma Valley areas of California. In the model of many highly regarded hospitality venues in those regions, the primary destination is the restaurant and its carefully developed cellar, and luxurious accommodation is supportive and complementary to the spotlight focus on superlative food and wine. This concept is relatively rare in Australia and the Barossa in particular.
Together, Jim and Helen lead a dedicated team who are heading the development and importance of culinary tourism in Australia. The Louise is the launch site for this unique blend of seasonal regional food, world-class wine, and private hideaway accommodation.
Appellation Combined with one of the world's greatest vineyard regions, the dining experience at Appellation is a compelling reason to travel to South Australia and stay at The Louise. Executive Chef Mark McNamara joined the Carrekers to develop the food and wine component of The Louise into an Australian beacon for local, interstate and international travelers. Mark was inducted as a Baron of the Barossa for his sustained leadership in developing an awareness of Barossa produce and food, particularly for his founding membership of Food Barossa, early support of the Barossa Farmers Market and his core membership of the Barossa culinary team feted as gold medal winners of the 2003 Tasting Australia regional culinary competition.
The Original Louise Our name "The Louise" emanates from a long family history of entrepreneurs and strong women traced back to Mr. Carreker's grandmother. This name is a tribute to her memory and inspiration, and to the many other women on both sides of the family bearing the name. We are delighted The Louise has found her home in the Barossa, a region of real characters, experiences and truly strong inspirational women.
